By far the oldest company we at AART work with, John Smedley was founded in 1784. In those days at the start of the British industrial revolution, the company made just fabrics. Setting up business in Lea Mills 230 years ago, no one could have foreseen that today’s factory would still inhabit the same location. Knitting began in 1825 with one of the first fully fashioned knitting machines, producing long johns and other underwear garments, later expanding into knitting women’s tights. This in the days before nylon was invented and these were made from the fines woollens and silks. Today this know-how and these old school machines are still in use producing some of the finest knitwear in the world. All is still made, with pride in the United Kingdom, at Lea Mills to be precise. It’s a bold claim, but at AART we feel that the John Smedley merino knitwear is the best you can buy. Keeping it’s shape, washable, no pilling and tough to name but a few qualities, combined with a perfect fit and beautiful colours it will make the most satisfying sweater you’ll own. John Smedley is available in both our Rotterdam shop and online in our webstore.
